Genesis GV90: Donckerwolke’s super-luxury EV SUV nears production

Genesis, Hyundai’s premium brand, is moving forward with the production of its flagship electric SUV GV90. A camouflaged near-production prototype was spotted in South Korea, indicating that the model, likely based on the Hyundai Ioniq 9, is coming to market later this year.

In March of last year, Genesis unveiled the Neolun Concept, a large luxury SUV with suicide doors and a very high-end interior. This indicates that the Koreans are looking to rival European luxury brands like Mercedes-Maybach, Bentley, and possibly Jaguar after the latter’s transformation.

Production GV90 is coming later this year

It was still unclear at the time if the Genesis Neolun Concept, with Belgian designer Luc Donckerwolke responsible for the high-end look, would spawn a production version. Now, it seems that the light has turned green for the launch of the Genesis GV90, which will sit atop the range currently consisting of models like the GV60, GV70, and G80.

In a video uploaded by the South Korean YouTube channel HealerTV, several spy shots of a camouflaged prototype of the Genesis GV90 are shown on the back of a transport truck.

Under the wraps, a few things are clear: this prototype is already wearing the final bodywork, which indicates that a market launch is not far off. Several media outlets are reporting a late 2025 release.

No more suicide doors

Other features that stand out are that the Neolun Concept’s suicide doors are gone, replaced by conventional doors, likely to save on production and development costs. According to rumors, two versions will become available: a Standard and a long-wheelbase GV90 Exclusive.

The Genesis GV90’s platform and powertrain will likely be shared with the recently launched Hyundai Ioniq 9, a three-row electric SUV that shares some components with the Kia EV9 and rivals the Volvo EX90. Even the Ioniq features a luxury cabin, with swiveling and reclining massaged ‘Relaxation Seats.’

More than 600 km range?

The Ioniq 9 is built on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform and features a robust 110.3 kWh battery, providing up to 620 kilometers of range on the Long-Range RWD model with 19-inch wheels.

The AWD version adds a front motor for enhanced traction, while the Performance AWD model boasts dual 160kW motors and achieves 0 to 100 km/hour in just 4.9 seconds. The Genesis GV90 will likely opt for the top AWD spec for its powertrain.

The Genesis GV90’s features, specs, and pricing will be more certain by the end of 2025 when the model is set to be announced. Production should begin in early 2026 at Hyundai’s Ulsan EV plant.
