Kia details the PV5’s 16 modular variants

Kia held the PV5 Tech Day in Gwangmyeong, South Korea, where it detailed the specific technology and modular assembly behind its first commercial vehicle, the PV5. Thanks to a customer-led approach, up to 16 variants of the mid-sized van are available, ranging from basic cargo versions to wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

The Kia PV5 was launched earlier this summer in both basic Cargo and five-seat Passenger variants. But Kia’s first commercial ‘Platform Beyond Vehicle’ (PBV) was designed for much more, and sets the foundation for future models with high degrees of modularity.

Modular assembly creates flexibility while limiting costs

In total, up to 16 different configurations of the Kia PV5 will be available, which are created from a small number of modular assemblies. For instance, the longer cargo model uses the same rear assembly as the standard length variant, but with a long-body module in the middle. And passenger models use the same base, but with different quarter glass and tailgate panels.

Kia also worked with business clients to develop its first commercial vehicle, compensating for the manufacturer’s lack of experience in the space. By inviting customers to its PBV Partners Days, Kia conceived the idea of offering the removal of the front passenger seat to expand cargo space, utilizing stain-resistant materials, and a walk-through option on high-roof models to aid delivery drivers in their work.

The Kia PV5 is also available as a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), which features a side-entry ramp and universal securing systems, with the floor kept as low as possible. First-party support for wheelchair users is relatively rare, as the market is primarily comprised of conversion specialists.

Up to 400 km range and cheaper than its rivals

To recall, the Kia PV5 is available with three different battery configurations: 43.3 kWh, 51.5 kWh, or 71.2 kWh, offering a WLTP range of up to 400 km. All are powered by the same 120 kW (163 hp) motor, while fast-charging from 10 to 80% takes 30 minutes.

Pricing starts at €37,690 for the Passenger version (51.5 kWh) or €41,690 for the larger battery option. The PV5 Cargo L2H1 is available from €32,250, excluding VAT in Belgium, making it one of the most affordable electric vans in its segment. The 71.2-kWh version costs €35,500 ex. VAT.

As a reference, the Citroën ë-Jumpy has a base price of €32,580 ex. VAT, but it has far inferior electric performance, while the more comparable Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo costs at least €44,400 ex. VAT.

Kia will open 20 PBV centers in Belgium and Luxembourg as part of the existing dealer network. These centers will feature dedicated commercial vehicle specialists and service protocols tailored to this new segment for the brand. The PV5 Passenger will be available at every Kia dealership.
