Daimler Truck has revealed the series production name of its eActros LongHaul battery-electric long-distance heavy truck. It will enter production in 2024 as the eActros 600, referring to its battery capacity and putting it above the eActros 300/400 electric distribution trucks.
Daimler Truck unveiled its long-distance electric hauler’s ‘concept prototype’ in September 2022 at the IAA Transportation in Hannover. Since then, the truck has completed winter testing in Finland, while a prototype fleet of 50 vehicles is being built for real-world testing with customers.
Built alongside the diesel Actros
Once these customers have completed their testing, the eActros 600 will enter production in 2024 in the Wörth plant in Germany alongside the diesel-powered Actros trucks. Key components for its battery-electric driveline are built in Mannheim, Gaggenau, and Kassel.
Compared to the regular Actros models, the eActros 600 gets a more aerodynamic design thanks to the smooth front end, while the interior also gets an upgrade. However, Daimler Truck hasn’t shared any images of that yet.
500 km range, megawatt charging
Regarding powertrain specifications, the Mercedes eActros 600 will still be powered by three battery packs, with a total capacity of 600 kWh. That should give the truck a range of 500 km, while megawatt (1 000 kW) fast-charging allows the batteries to recover from 20 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes.
The eAxle on the rear has two electric motors, which deliver a continuous power output of 400 kW (544 hp), with a peak power of ‘over 600 kW’ (816 hp). As a comparison: the current diesel-powered Actros tops out at 460 kW (625 hp), with the additional limitations of a traditional gearbox.
According to Karin Rådström, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Trucks, the eActros 600 “can replace the majority of diesel trucks in the important long-haul segment.” The company has already sold a few hundred examples to large transport firms like DB Schenker, Tevex Logistics, Dachser, and Hegelmann Group.
