VDL to supply Trandsdev 42 e-Citeas while last Van Hool buses are auctioned

Transdev Nederland, one of the Netherlands’ public transport operators, runs buses nationwide. It has chosen Dutch bus manufacturer VDL to deliver 42 Citea e-buses for the Hoeksche Waard/Goeree-Overflakkee (HWGO) concession. Meanwhile, the last Van Hool buses after the bankruptcy are auctioned.

Transdev is a French multinational public transport and ambulance company operating in 19 countries. Of the 85.000+ employees, around 7,000 work in the Netherlands, where the company mainly operates under the Connexxion name.

However, the HWGO concession, a public transport area just south of Rotterdam, will switch to the Transdev name with R-Net buses from 14 December 2025, with all-new VDL electric buses to mark the occasion.

City buses with 500+ km range

Transdev has ordered 42 electric Citea LE-12 low-entry buses, which are ideal for city operation. The 12.2-meter buses can accommodate up to 110 passengers and offer a range of 500 to 600 km, with a minimum of 250 km in cold winter weather, according to VDL.

The new buses also feature a full suite of electronic safety systems, such as intelligent speed assistance and driver drowsiness detection, which are managed with the latest General Safety Regulations (GSR II) from the EU. Other features include seat heating, phone holders, reading lights, and USB connections.

In other VD, 36 Van Hool buses are being auctioned publicly by Belgian auction company VH Auctions News to liquidate some of the remaining Van Hool assets, of which the bus division was sold auctions.

One of the buses included in the auction is Van Hool’s hydrogen fuel cell pilot bus. It was built in 2021 for the Brussels public transport company MIVB/STIB as part of a two-year test operation. The bus was initially delayed by six months. Still, it seems to have run for a while, as the odometer shows 42,445 km on the clock.

Another hydrogen bus prototype is also being auctioned, but this one has never been registered and will likely be unable to drive on public roads. The rest of the auction consists of multiple city auto cars, auto cars, and even some classic Van Hoolthats, which were stored in the company’s headquarters in Koningshooikt (Lier).
