All-new MG4 has entered production

MG has started producing the second-generation MG4 electric hatchback in SAIC’s Nanjing factory. The new MG4 falls in line with the design of the Cyberster and is a collaboration with tech expert Oppo, which supplies the in-car infotainment system.

The MG4 will launch in China in August and will likely come to European shores as well, replacing the current-gen model, which has been a success.

The all-new MG4 first made an appearance on China’s MIIT website in March 2025, when the vehicle was posted for regulatory approval. Along with images, manufacturers are also obligated to supply some key specifications, which give us some insight into the direction MG has taken with the new MG4.

Larger and smoother

The second-generation electric hatchback has grown compared to its predecessor and is now 4395 mm long, 1842 mm wide, 1551 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. That makes it 108 mm longer, slightly wider, and 35 mm higher, with a 45 mm longer wheelbase compared to the first-gen MG4.

The design has changed completely as well. Whereas the original MG4 EV had a rather sporty design, with aggressive headlamps and a wide stance, the new model has smoothed out its edges. It features a similar design language to the MG Cyberster, the company’s electric roadster, including the split front bumper and the arrow-shaped rear lights.

Oppo infotainment system

On the inside, the all-new MG4 has been completely overhauled as well. The new generation gets a minimalist dashboard, with a smooth finish all around and floating displays. It seems that there will be multiple color options as well, including the beige finish shown and a black interior for other trim levels.

The infotainment system is provided by Oppo, a Chinese electronics manufacturer known in Europe for its smartphones and the owner of brands such as OnePlus and Realme. Additionally, phone mirroring and a wireless charger for smartphones are included.

Range and pricing soon?

Although the second-gen MG4 has now entered production in Nanjing, we still don’t know all of the specs, nor any pricing details. What we do know is that there’s a rear-mounted 120 kW (163 hp) motor, powered by an LFP battery.

No range specs have been given, and although rumors speak of  a possible 800-km range thanks to a “semi-solid-state” battery, the MG4’s curb weight of 1,485 kg indicates a smaller battery.

More will be known as MG launches the all-new MG4 in August, when we’ll also see the pricing and perhaps an indication of the model’s likely launch in Europe.

Thanks to its affordable price tag and its competitive EV specs, the first-generation MG4 was a success on European markets, with over 250,000 units sold globally. The brand is also the strongest Chinese marque in Belgium.
