MG4 launches in China at half-price of its predecessor: €10,266

SAIC Motor is launching the newest version of the popular MG4 hatchback in China, starting at a stunt price of ¥73,800 or some €10,266. That’s nearly half the price – 47.21% lower – than that of the outgoing model, which cost ¥ 139,800 or €19,308. It fuels expectations for a more affordable European successor for the MG4, which starts now at €27.285 in Belgium.

Mass production of the 2025 MG4 began in July 2025 at SAIC’s Nanjing plant. The official launch event took place on August 5, 2025, with deliveries expected to commence in September 2025. In China, the new MG4 comes with four variants immediately available. A semi-solid-state battery version will follow, for which the price will be announced in September, and mass production is set to begin later this year.

LFP batteries for up to 530 km range

For the time being, the new MG4 offers two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery options: a 42.8 kWh battery with a CLTC range of 437 km and a 53.9 kWh version with 530 km range. Both variants are powered by a 120 kW (163 PS) permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 250 Nm of torque, enabling a top speed of 160 km/h.

The Comfort basic version with 437 km range starts at 73,800 yuan (10,266 euros), Ease (437 km range) lists at ¥81,800 (€11,379), Freedom (437 km) at ¥90,800 (€12,631), and the top version Smart (530 km) at ¥105,800 (€14,714).

The new MG4 hatchback measures 4,395 mm × 1,842 mm × 1,551 mm and has a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. That is 45 mm longer than the outgoing model. Legroom should be ample in the rear, where the 60/40 foldable backrests get a 27-degree recline angle for more comfort.

SAIC Motor, the parent company of the MG brand, has officially posted the first pictures of the all-new MG4’s interior on Weibo at the end of July.

Two color schemes are offered: Rose Purple and Mountain Blue, inspired by the muted, sophisticated palette used by Giorgio Morandi. He was a 20th-century Italian painter renowned for his still lifes, which featured subdued tones and harmonious compositions.

From the driver’s seat position, the most notable change is the even more symmetrical, minimalist dashboard. The rotary dial for gear selection on a floating console has been relocated to a column-mounted electronic shifter, thereby freeing up space in the console.

MG (SAIC) has worked with Oppo on a new advanced infotainment and connectivity platform for the first time. Oppo is a Chinese tech giant best known for smartphones and smart devices. The in-car system now integrates Oppo’s ColorOS Auto, a customized OS based on Oppo’s smartphone ecosystem.

Semi-solid state batteries

MG promised last year that it would debut solid-state batteries in its range by 2025 – before clarifying that these new batteries wouldn’t be fully solid-state, but rather ‘semi-solid’.

They still use a small amount of liquid electrolyte to enhance stability and reduce costs. It was expected that the Cyberster would get the new battery tech, but it is clear now that the cheaper MG4 will get the honor instead by the end of this year.

MG’s General Manager Chen Cui stated earlier that the new semi-solid-state battery utilizes 5% liquid electrolyte. It is based on LFP technology, but offers an energy density comparable to that of NMC batteries: 180 Wh/kg. It should also perform better in cold conditions, with MG promising 13.8% better range retention at -7°C compared to traditional LFP batteries.
