From 2028 onward, postal workers at Bpost will no longer deliver mail on standard bicycles. In the near future, they will only use an electric bicycle. This year, Bpost has already placed its first new order for 440 e-bikes.
According to Bpost, the decision is a logical evolution due to the increasing volume of parcels and the decline in letters. The company also wants to invest in the comfort of postmen.
Comfort
“With an electric bicycle, the postman’s round becomes smoother, more pleasant, and above all less strenuous,” Bpost explains. In addition, there are slightly fewer traffic incidents involving electric bicycles compared to conventional bicycles.
It is also possible to attach an e-bike trailer to the electric bicycles. An electric trailer requires no additional pedal force and can hold up to 150 parcels.
Every day, 10,000 postmen go on rounds, 3,000 of whom go by bicycle. Over half of the cycling postmen already use electric bikes, but 1,500 conventional bicycles are still in use. Bpost expects to retire the last of its conventional bicycles by the end of 2027.
Bpost’s fleet has been the largest in the country for years and is also rapidly being electrified, both with bicycles and vans. The parcel delivery company already has more than 3,000 e-vans operating in the country, and it will soon also surpass the 3,000 e-bike milestone.
