De Lijn launches simplified version of its app

The Flemish public transport company De Lijn is introducing a simplified version of its app. Compared to the current app, this version has been simplified, focusing on basic information, large buttons, and easy navigation.

The basic version, or simple mode, was developed for people who are not very digitally savvy or need extra support.

Not possible to buy a ticket

In the stripped-down version, the focus is on the most important travel information – planning a trip, checking arrivals at a stop, and saving favorite stops or lines.

For example, it is not possible to buy a ticket because many users in the target groups – people with low literacy skills, those who are more sensitive to stimuli, and those with cognitive, motor, or visual impairments – have a season ticket. The simple mode also has a read-aloud function.

‘So easy, it’s that simple’

The new basic version of the app, developed and tested in collaboration with the target groups, is now available to everyone. “Even travelers who just want to quickly plan their route or check a connection without using all the advanced features of the standard app can benefit from the simplified display,” says De Lijn.

Users can switch between the comprehensive and simplified versions via the settings. In the next phase, an AI assistant will also be added to provide even better support to travelers.

“Thanks to thorough user research and close collaboration with associations, we have developed a mode that focuses on what really matters: clear and understandable travel information,” says Ann Schoubs, Director General of De Lijn. “Whether you need extra support or simply prefer simplicity, this mode makes it easy.”

The launch is accompanied by a campaign ‘Zo makkelijk dat da is’ (So easy, it’s that simple).
