Ferrari will auction off the first Luce at Monterey Week, California

Ferrari will be auctioning off the first example of its first production battery-electric car to whoever has the deepest pockets. Ferrari will be putting the first production example of its full-electric Luce, Chassis 0, on the auction block at Monterey Car Week in August.

Since its official premiere, the  Ferrari Luce has been quite controversial. Some seem to love it; others seem less than thrilled that it exists. Whatever your position, it’s impossible to deny that the car is unlike anything Ferrari has ever made before.

Customized first car

Ferrari has customized the first example of the Luce via its Ferrari ‘Tailor Made’ program, which is the company’s exclusive way of customizing its cars directly at the factory for some of its top clients.

It selected the theme of ‘light’ for the car to showcase how its paint (a special coat of Madreperla Semi-Gloss) can “transform the perception” of the car’s surfaces, the company claims. Its formulation incorporates a dedicated Ferrari Tailor Made pigment, capable of producing iridescent reflections that evolve from green to violet depending on the intensity and angle of the light.

“The semi-gloss finish preserves the depth and richness of the pearlescent effect while creating a sophisticated balance between gloss and matte surfaces, enhancing the sculptural quality of the car’s forms. The complexity of the application process ensures that each example is unique and inimitable in its chromatic nuances,” says the press release.

Exclusive

The Tailor Made program worked closely with Ferrari’s Design Studio to build out Chassis 0. It gave the car dedicated wheels, bespoke brake calipers, and set its emblem against an optical white background. It also wrapped the interior in its program-exclusive Le Mans metallic leather and added Grigio Corvara accents.

“The interior introduces a new interpretation of luminosity through the use of Le Mans metallic leather in Perla, an exclusive material developed for the Ferrari Tailor Made program and derived from carefully selected Swiss hides. Its distinctive softness and reflective properties contribute to the diffusion of light within the cabin, enhancing the sense of space and refinement.”

The secondary interior elements are finished in Grigio Corvara rather than traditional black, creating visual continuity that reinforces the luminous character of the entire project. The theme of white extends to numerous details developed specifically for this configuration, including dedicated wheels, bespoke brake calipers, and the Ferrari logo set against an optical white background, an exclusive solution created for this car.

And if these customizations weren’t enough, Ferrari says that it also fitted the car with a dedicated plaque to set it apart from every other Luce. The Italian brand eventually wants the Luce to make up 20% of its annual sales, so standing out might be particularly important for the new owner if the car actually gets driven on the road.

1.1 million dollars target

RM Sotheby’s, which is hosting the auction, calls it “an unrepeatable opportunity” and expects the car to fetch around $1.1 million, with the proceeds to be donated to The Ferrari Foundation.

It’s not that unrealistic to expect this. The ‘basic’ Ferrari Luce already costs $640,000 in the U.S., assuming you can actually secure one. And, being the first of its kind —Ferrari’s first production EV and the first example of this chassis—it will undoubtedly fetch a premium from a collector who wants exclusivity. And there are quite a lot of them among Ferrari owners and enthusiasts.
