Audi A2 e-tron will offer a range of almost 650 km

Audi is preparing the A2 e-tron as its new entry-level electric model for the compact segment. All four powertrain variants will be available to order immediately following the world premiere this autumn. Prices will start at €38,200 in Germany. New spy shots now show the EV almost completely undisguised and reveal further details of its design.

Among the most striking details are the very small winglet-style door handles on both the front and rear doors. The compact electric Audi will share this solution with cars like the new Volvo EX60 and the BMW X5.

The elongated roofline and the rear window, split by a spoiler, also recall the original Audi A2. The new model also appears to do without a rear window wiper. Footage published on YouTube shows slim daytime running lights at the front, while the main headlights are positioned below them.

Audi first confirmed the A2 e-tron as its new entry-level electric model in March and unveiled a camouflaged prototype in May. Since then, the vehicle has been undergoing a range of validation tests.

In Lapland, Audi evaluated the battery, thermal management and driving dynamics in low temperatures. Wind tunnel testing focused on aerodynamics, while further testing on public roads is intended to validate the chassis and driver assistance systems under everyday conditions.

Range of up to 649 km

Audi has now also released the first technical specifications. The A2 e-tron will be available with four power outputs of 125, 140, 170 and 240 kW. This means that the first three versions have the updated electromotor (codenamed APP350) we can also find in the VW ID. 3 Neo, for example, and that the top version uses the APP550 motor used by VW in the ID. 7.

The lowest stated WLTP energy consumption is 13.0 kWh/100 kilometers, while the maximum WLTP range is 649 kilometers. That will probably be a combination of the 170 kW APP350 motor with a 79 kWh battery pack. The Audi A2 e-tron also has 22 km more range than the comparable VW ID. 3 Neo, signaling that the aerodynamic performance of the Audi newcomer must be excellent.

That would make the A2 e-tron one of the more efficient electric cars in its segment. Audi has not yet officially confirmed battery capacities or DC charging performance. However, one statement on the company’s German website is noteworthy: “All powertrain variants will be available from the world premiere.”

Technically, the A2 e-tron is thus expected to be closely related to the new Volkswagen ID.3 Neo and Cupra Born. Many points to the model being based on the Volkswagen Group’s updated MEB architecture. Audi has not yet specified the exact platform or the resulting technical details. Reports suggesting battery capacities ranging from 50 to 79 kWh and DC charging capacities of up to 180 kW therefore remain unconfirmed.

Starting at ± €40,000

The entry-level version is expected to start at €38,200. According to the information released so far, the 125 kW model will come equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, adaptive cruise control and a reversing camera. Heated seats and a heated steering wheel are set to become standard from the 140 kW version onwards.

The A2 e-tron is scheduled to make its world premiere this autumn, when the model will also become available for configuration. Production will take place at Audi’s main plant in Ingolstadt. For Audi, the compact EV is strategically important because it expands the brand’s electric portfolio well below the Q4 e-tron.

With a starting price around €40,000 and a range of up to 650 kilometers, Audi is positioning the model not as a low-cost small car but as an electric entry point into the compact segment. The extent to which it differs technically from related Volkswagen Group volume models is likely to become clear when the car is fully unveiled this autumn.
