Geely’s 16-in-1 drive promises lighter, leaner EVs

Geely has unveiled what it calls the world’s first 16-in-1 intelligent electric drive, promising lower weight, reduced energy losses, and tighter control of almost every major electric powertrain function.

The updated Lynk & Co 02 will be the first production model to use the technology, although a European launch has not yet been confirmed.

In China, the electric crossover is sold as the Lynk & Co Z20 and will be renamed Lynk & Co 20 as part of its facelift. It is expected to reach Chinese customers during the third quarter of 2026, combining the new drive with an 800-volt architecture, silicon-carbide electronics,s and charging speeds of up to 6C.

Geely will also demonstrate the system in the Galaxy TT sedan. The apparently conflicting claims about which model comes first reflect the difference between the technology’s public debut and its first commercial application.

Twelve hardware functions

The system, developed with Geely powertrain specialist InfiMotion, combines twelve hardware functions and four software and control functions.

These include the electric motor, inverter, reduction gearbox, onboard charger, DC-DC converter, high-voltage distribution, battery management, thermal control,ol and the main vehicle-control functions.

In other words, it is more than simply a motor and gearbox in a single housing. Geely is effectively consolidating much of the electric car’s power and control architecture into a single integrated domain.

75 kilograms

The complete unit weighs 75 kilograms and is said to be more than 15% lighter than comparable mainstream systems. Geely claims it eliminates more than 180 components, cuts high-voltage cable length by 30%, and reduces low-voltage wiring by 15%.

Its compact dimensions could also free up around 28 liters of additional space. Depending on the vehicle, that could be used for a larger boot, more passenger room, a bigger battery, or additional chassis components.

For manufacturers, deeper integration also means fewer parts to purchase, assemble,e and test. This could lower production costs and shorten assembly times, particularly once the system is used across several models.

Geely quotes a comprehensive CLTC efficiency of 93.8%. The system uses an 800-volt architecture, silicon-carbide power electronics, thin electrical steel, and compact flat-wire motor windings. Shorter cables and fewer connectors also help reduce electrical resistance.

However, the headline efficiency figure is more evolutionary than revolutionary. InfiMotion already claims 93.7% for one of its existing electric drives. The larger step is the integration of charging, battery, thermal, and vehicle-control functions, rather than the extra 0.1 percentage point.

8.2 kWh per 100 kilometers

Geely has also promoted an energy consumption record of 8.2 kWh per 100 kilometers around Qinghai Lake. That result was achieved under specific test conditions in the Galaxy TT and cannot be directly compared with a homologated WLTP consumption figure.

Another claimed advantage is faster control. Geely says the one-chip architecture reduces control-chain latency from around 40 milliseconds to as little as two milliseconds. That should help the car coordinate acceleration, regenerative braking, traction control, and, in dual-motor versions, the distribution of power between the axles.

Improved cooling and active gearbox lubrication should also allow the system to maintain high performance for longer. The architecture supports dual-motor outputs of up to 425 kW, although the updated Lynk & Co will initially use a single 245 kW rear motor.

The main unanswered question concerns repair costs. Combining the motor, charger, converter, and power electronics can reduce production complexity, but a failure of any one component could require replacing a much larger assembly. Geely has not yet clarified how easily individual modules can be repaired or replaced.

In other Geely brands?

The technology is highly likely to spread to other Geely Auto products, particularly models from Galaxy, Lynk & Co, and Zeekr. InfiMotion already supplies electric-drive technology for vehicles sold by Zeekr, Smart, Lotus, Volvo,o and Polestar.

That does not mean every Geely Holding brand will use the complete 16-in-1 unit. Volvo is developing its own next-generation electric motors and 800-volt architecture for the SPA3 platform, first introduced with the EX60. Polestar’s future models will also increasingly share Volvo’s new technology base.

Volvo and Polestar could adopt individual elements developed by InfiMotion, but there is no evidence that Geely plans to impose the same integrated drive across all its brands.

There is also no confirmed timetable for Europe or Belgium. Lynk & Co has only recently introduced a separate Model Year 2027 update for the European 02, retaining the existing 200 kW motor, 66 kWh battery, 445-kilometer WLTP range, and 150 kW fast-charging capability.

The new Chinese version is therefore a much more substantial technical update than the European MY27 model. A European arrival during 2027, possibly as a Model Year 2028 version, appears plausible, but remains unconfirmed. European homologation, battery selection, charging hardware, and local validation of its lidar-based assistance systems could all delay the launch.
