Geely launches E2 in Belgium at €19,490, just below Twingo

Six weeks after announcing the E2 for Belgium, Geely has now confirmed the price, battery sizes, and launch timing of its compact electric hatchback. Pre-orders open on 3 August, with the first cars expected at Belgian dealers in September.

The Belgian E2 starts at €19,490, including a €2,000 early-bird discount. Its regular entry price will be €21,490. That makes it €1,500 cheaper than in the Netherlands, where Geely announced an introductory price of €20,990 and a regular price of €22,990.

The new information also clears up several inconsistencies in the initial Belgian announcement. The entry-level E2 Pro gets a 35 kWh LFP battery and an official WLTP range of 252 kilometers. The Max and Ultra use a 47 kWh battery and reach 345 kilometers, enough, according to Geely, to drive from De Panne to Arlon without recharging.

In June, Geely had attributed the shorter range to the Max and the longer range to the Pro and Ultra, without specifying the test cycle or battery capacities. Those specifications have now been corrected and completed.

Larger than a traditional city car

At 4.14 meters long, the rear-wheel-drive E2 is larger than a traditional city car. Its 2.65-meter wheelbase helps create a five-seat cabin that Geely claims is among the roomiest in the segment.

Boot capacity is 375 liters, supplemented by a substantial 70-liter frunk. Kerb weight ranges from 1,290 kilograms for the Pro to 1,365 kilograms for the Max and Ultra.

Standard equipment includes heated seats, seven airbags, Geely’s Flyme Auto cockpit with a 14.6-inch central touchscreen, driver-assistance systems, and multi-link rear suspension.

The safety package includes a driving camera, three parking radars, and five millimeter-wave radars. The Ultra adds a 540-degree camera system that combines a surround-view with a virtual image of the area beneath the car.

Rival for Renault Twingo E-Tech Electric

The Belgian launch price places the E2 directly opposite the new Renault Twingo E-Tech Electric, which starts at €19,500. The Geely is therefore just €10 cheaper during its introductory campaign, although its permanent list price will be €1,990 higher.

However, the cars do not quite fill the same role. The Twingo is a 3.79-meter A-segment model with four seats, a 27.5 kWh battery, and a WLTP range of 264 kilometers. The E2 is 35 centimeters longer, seats five, and offers substantially more luggage room.

Its basic Pro travels slightly less far than the Twingo despite having the larger battery. The E2 Max and Ultra turn that comparison on its head with their 345-kilometer range.

Renault counters with a lighter, more compact package better suited to congested cities. Geely’s proposition is closer to the B-segment space at an A-segment price, particularly while the launch discount applies.

Growing group of affordable EVs

The E2 will also compete with the Dacia Spring, BYD Dolphin Surf, and Hyundai Inster. Compared with these small EVs, its rear-wheel drive, multi-link rear suspension, five-seat interior, and large combined luggage capacity give it an unusual specification for the money.

Pricing was the largest unanswered question when newmobility.news first reported on the Belgian E2 in June. Geely then spoke only of a price around €20,000 and confirmed that the car would arrive after the summer. The final introductory figure is slightly lower, while the official battery and WLTP data now make its market position much clearer.

Geely says the E2 has sold more than 800,000 units worldwide in less than two years. Known as the Xingyuan in China and EX2 in several export markets, it has become one of the group’s most important volume models.

Belgium will now show whether that sales success can be translated to Europe, where the price gap with established brands has narrowed considerably.
