Volkswagen is preparing to launch a long-wheelbase version of its ID. Buzz Cargo. The LWB passenger version is already available, but now the van-version follows suit.
At a brand event in Berlin, Volkswagen has unveiled a long wheelbase version of its electric ID. Buzz Cargo van. The longer wheelbase will bring several improvements for professional users, including a bigger cargo area, more battery capacity and a 4Motion option.
Finally confirmed
While the LWB version of the ID. Buzz passenger was already availabe, Volkswagen had not yet announced the equivalent Cargo variant. But now there is confirmation that it will be launched in Belgium later this year, and will be one of the highlights at the Brussels Motor Show in January 2027.
The ID. Buzz LWB is 4.96 meters long, an increase of about 25 cm compared to the SWB. This bumps up the load length to 2.45 meters, while the load volume goes up to 4.4 m3, from 3.9 m3. The payload will, however, be lower, dropping from a maximum of 750 kg to 690 kg.
Bigger battery and AWD
On the technical front, the Cargo version will follow the people carrier’s example. This means the LWB van will also be available with a 86 kWh battery pack (up to 79 kWh in the SWB). A WLTP range has not yet been confirmed, but is expected to be just below 500 km, in line with the passenger version. Moreover, it will be available in both rear wheel-drive versions and a new 4Motion AWD version with a combined 250 kW (340 hp).
The LWB ID. Buzz Cargo will be delivered as standard with double sliding doors. It will also benefit from technological improvements announced earlier this summer. These include the new Innovision infotainment system, Connected Travel Assist cruise control with traffic light recognition, a V2L function, and a new design for the steering wheel with physical buttons.
Competition heating up
The fact that VW finally announces an LWB version of its electric retro van, signals that the market is heating up. The Kia PV5, the 2026 International VAN of the Year, is giving it fierce competition in the segment. With its 4.4 m3 load volume, the ID. Buzz Cargo LWB will match the PV5’s L2 version.
The question is what the price of the new LWB ID. Buzz will be. It has a very distinct character, but also carries a reasonably high price tag, especially compared to the PV5. With a longer wheelbase, its price might also compete with VW’s own e-Transporter. The electric VW Transporter offers a 5.8 m3 load volume in its L1 version, but has to make do with a smaller battery pack providing less driving range, even in the improved version.
