Belgian cycling airbag on Time Magazine’s ‘best inventions’ list

American Time Magazine has included the bicycle airbag from Turnhout-based company Aerobag on its list of the best inventions of 2026. The system protects cyclists in a fall by inflating an airbag around the neck and upper body in just 100 milliseconds.

The Aerobag has been in development for six years. The system is integrated into a pair of cycling shorts, weighs approximately 500 grams, and is barely visible under a shirt. Nine sensors monitor movement 200 times per second.

Protection of neck, back, and chest

According to the developers, it has no measurable aerodynamic impact, but in a fall, an airbag inflates in approximately 100 milliseconds, protecting the neck, chest, back, and hips. The system can be reused after replacing its CO₂ inflator.

Unlike many safety innovations, the Aerobag is already commercially available, although professional racing approval is still pending. It isn’t the first bicycle airbag, but its lightweight, discreet integration into cycling clothing sets it apart.

The Belgian engineer Bert Celis began developing the Aerobag inspired by the fatal crash of cyclist Bjorg Lambrecht during the Tour of Poland in August 2019.

Time Magazine selected the Belgian invention in the Sports & Fitness category. The technology is intended for both professional cyclists and recreational riders.

Prices are €685 for the electronic Plug-In unit, excluding cycling shorts; €735 for the commuter version. Replacement inflators cost €73.55. However; the Aerobag is not the only system available.

French manufacturer Helite offers the B’Safe cycling airbag vest (around €690). EVOC developed an airbag backpack for commuters. And more significantly, Decathlon’s Van Rysel and In&motion have developed a rival racing airbag, claiming deployment in 60 milliseconds, versus Aerobag’s 100 ms.
