Omoda 4: the new entry-level EV that outpaces its bigger brother

With the introduction of the 4, the Chinese Chery-brand Omoda adds a second electric car to its line-up, after the Omoda 5. The latter receives an update to differentiate it from the newcomer further.

Chery is now one of the largest Chinese manufacturers in Europe in terms of registrations. Not because of the Chery brand itself, which is only just starting its rollout on the European market and setting up a Belgian structure, but because of two of its brands that are doing well: Jaecoo and Omoda.

Compact addition

Besides (plug-in) hybrid models like the 5 SHS-H and 9 SHS-P, Omoda also has one EV in its European catalog, the 5 EV. But at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026, the brand unveiled its second EV, the new entry-level Omoda 4, which will also be available as a hybrid.

The crossover gets a geometric look, introducing the brand’s ‘Cyber Mecha’ design language. From some angles, it recalls features of newer Nissans, certain Lexus models and the Peugeot 2008.

While Omoda calls it its new entry-level model, it measures 4.42 meters, the same length as the current Omoda 5; at 2.7 meters, the 4 also has a longer wheelbase (+7 cm).

But its bigger brother is getting an update to correct that – see below. With its size, the Omoda 4 is a competitor to models like the budget-friendly Citroën (ë-)C3 Aircross or the (electric) Opel Frontera.

The Omoda 4’s interior is rather clean, except for the fighter-jet- and Lamborghini-inspired start button. It boasts an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.2-inch central display. The trunk offers about 400 liters of storage space in the EV.

Electric and hybrid

The production version of the Omoda 4 had already been unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show in April of this year. While the brand’s ‘Super Hybrid System’ was available at the time, Omoda chose a battery-electric driveline for the model’s European launch.

The 4 EV has an electric motor delivering 218 hp and 275 Nm to the front wheels. It comes with a choice between two LFP battery packs: one with a capacity of 50 kWh and one with 67 kWh. The latter should be enough for a range of about 450 km. DC charging power is rated at 120 kW.

The Hybrid version of the Omoda 4 offers 224 hp and 295 Nm. It combines a 1.5 petrol engine with two electric motors (a 150 kW traction motor and a 100 kW generator), with a 1,83 kWh NMC battery to store the electric energy.

Whether the Omoda 4 will be offered only as an EV or also with the hybrid driveline announced in China depends on individual markets. The same goes for the Omoda 5, which is sold as an EV in Belgium and the Netherlands, but as both an EV and a HEV in Germany, for example.

The Omoda 5 EV gets an update

Speaking of the Omoda 5: the model that sits above the 4 in the brand’s line-up is getting an update to defend its positioning. Compared to the current model, the whole front gets a new look, and the rear also gets a makeover.

It also grows 13 cm in length, measuring 4,55 meters. This boosts interior space and increases the trunk from 360 to 442 liters. The interior also gets an upgrade with a new dashboard and bigger screens.

This update will need to ensure that the Omoda 5 maintains its position above the new 4. But the EV’s technical specifications are less promising in that regard. The motor gets an upgrade from 204 to 218 hp, just like the Omoda 4, but its battery capacity stays at 61 kWh.

Less battery capacity and a bigger size than its smaller brother mean less range for the Omoda 5: 430 km. The good news is that the DC charging capacity increases significantly, from 80 kW in the current version to 130 kW in the updated model.

Both the new Omoda 4 and 5 will be available from 2027. Price-wise, the 5 is expected to cost slightly more than the current model, while the 4 is expected to cost slightly less.
