MG to unveil two sporty EV prototypes at Goodwood FOS

At the upcoming Festival of Speed in Goodwood, MG will enroll its Cyberster for the famous hill climb. The company also announces that it will show two additional prototypes at the fair. The Cyberster taking its chances at the festival is a confirmation that it will be offered in Europe.

When MG lifted the veils of the Cyberster at the Shanghai Auto Show in spring, little was known about the market introduction of the zero-emission rebirth of the company’s iconic roadster.

But reactions from dealers and potential customers, especially in the UK, have been overwhelming, according to the British branch of the brand. MG is now feeding upon that interest with a public debut for Europe at Goodwood FOS.

For sale during summer

Aiden He, CEO of MG Motor Nordic and Benelux, said that Goodwood was the ideal stage to embody his company’s return to sports cars. To underline the ambition, the Cyberster will be flanked by another sports prototype called EX4 and a third nameless BEV with a dynamic touch. The latter will already go on sale this summer.

Not all technical details of the Cyberster have been undisclosed. MG wants it to be the first affordable all-electric roadster, featuring a rear-wheel driven version of 309 hp and an all-wheel drive with twin motors and 536 hp.

Due to the battery pack, the two-seater has a length of 4,4 meters, lending it more or less the dimensions of a BWM Z4. The car was designed in London under the supervision of Carl Gotham. It has a Kammback-inspired tail to reduce drag and improve range.

Best-selling Chinese brand

MG is celebrating its 100th anniversary next year and is the best-selling Chinese brand in Europe. It was also one of the first to hit its shores. While the company didn’t shift more than 1 000 cars in 2019, it’s on track to reach 120 000 units this year. In Europe’s biggest market, Germany, it sells almost three times better (May 2023: 1 780) than runner-up Polestar (629).

MG has carved out a name in sporty two-seaters with a soft top, thanks to hereditary models like the MGB, Midget, and Triumph. The previous roadster it launched dates from 1995 when the company still operated under a British flag and launched the mid-engined MG-F.

The new Cyberster sits on a dedicated skateboard platform, with an interior that showed a yoke-style steering wheel when unveiled at Shanghai Auto Show.
