The Renault-Geely powertrain joint venture Horse Powertrain has unveiled a methanol-only range extender system. While this might not be the best fit for Europe, methanol-based drivelines are a big thing in China. But are they CO2-friendly?
The D20 Methanol driveline from Horse was presented at Auto China 2026. It pairs a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an axial-flux generator to feed electricity directly back into the battery pack. Unlike plug-in hybrids, the D20 operates exclusively in series-hybrid mode: the engine never directly drives the wheels. This is range extender technology.
Biggest methanol fleet
The fuel choice is significant. Except for a few private initiatives, there is no pan-European network of methanol filling stations. China is a much bigger market. It produces roughly 60 percent of the world’s methanol, has promoted M100-capable vehicles for several years now, and represents the world’s largest methanol fleet.
In total, China operates more than 28,000 methanol taxis. Range-extender electric vehicles account for over one million sales annually. So, make no mistake: Horse Powertrain is building for an existing market rather than trying to create one.
The environmental case is less straightforward. Most methanol currently produced in China is derived from coal. Though tailpipe emissions are lower, this undermines any carbon advantage over fossil fuels. The country is investing in e-methanol produced from renewable hydrogen and captured CO2, but scaling that process remains a difficult challenge.
Enter the axial-flux generator
Horse can build the hardware, but the carbon footprint of the fuel it burns depends on the energy policy of the country where it is sold. So, the D20 offers a turnkey solution for manufacturers seeking to enter China’s booming range-extender electric vehicle market without redesigning their battery platforms.
Horse claims the unit converts fuel to electricity at 47 percent efficiency, which is quite high, and that it weighs 170 kg in its entirety. The system can deliver up to 105 kW (143 hp), integrating the engine and power electronics. Exceptionally, it is mated to a yokeless, dual-rotor axial-flux electrical machine instead of a radial-flux unit.
The company has worked hard to downsize the axial-flux motor to keep the overall engine as compact as possible. As it turns out, the former is 46 percent shorter than a conventional unit and offers 63 percent higher volumetric power density.
It is mounted directly on the crankshaft, eliminating the need for a separate transmission and reducing mechanical losses. Silicon-carbide power modules allow it to interface with either 400 V or 800 V vehicle architectures.
Narrower in scope
A stumbling block for many methanol engines is cold starts. But Horse states that its high-energy ignition system, producing 240 millijoules, can fire the engine at temperatures as low as minus 35 degrees Celsius.
A lean-burn combustion strategy keeps nitrogen oxide emissions within both China’s CN6b standard and the upcoming Euro 7 limit (60 mg/km), according to the company. In laboratory testing, Horse reports that the D20 recharged a 40-kWh battery using 19.6 liters of methanol.
Horse was formed two years ago as a 50-50 joint venture between Renault and Geely, with Saudi Aramco later taking a 10 percent stake. It is headquartered in London and draws on roughly 125 years of combined engine heritage from its parent groups.
Previously, Horse has demonstrated the C15. This fuel-flexible engine can run on gasoline, ethanol, methanol, or synthetic fuel. It can also mechanically couple to the wheels when required.
The D20 Methanol is narrower in scope: it accepts only methanol, operates exclusively in series mode, and is targeted at markets with established M100 infrastructure.
