Sales of speed pedelecs dropped by 6% in 2020
The bicycle became popular among Belgians in corona times, but sales figures of speed pedelecs dropped. According to figures from sector federation Traxio, last year, 12 589 speed pedelecs were registered, or 6% less than the year before.
Speed pedelecs are most popular in Flanders (12 039 units, or 96%); Brussels only registered 262 of them, Wallonia 288. Sales figures for private speed pedelecs remained almost stable (-0,1%), while the part of leased speed pedelecs decreased significantly (-18,3%).
Sales dropped spectacularly in the provinces of Antwerp (-19%) and Flemish Brabant (-13%). According to Traxio, a possible explanation is the lack of traffic jams due to the corona crisis. People often buy a speed pedelec to avoid traffic congestion when commuting. Still, Flanders represents more than 95% of Belgian speed pedelec sales.
Another aspect that might have influenced sales of speed pedelecs is the introduction of a speed limit of 25 km/hour on bicycle paths.
