Flanders plans 38 highway construction sites in 2021
On Tuesday, Flemish Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Lydia Peeters (Open Vld), has announced 38 construction sites this year along the Flemish highways. The 38 construction sites include the renovation of 52 km of the road surface and the installation of baffle boards over 13 km.
The whole project is a cooperation of the Agency of Roads and Traffic (Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer, AWV), Lantis (Livable Antwerp by Innovation and Cooperation or Leefbaar Antwerpen door Innovatie en Samenwerken) and De Werkvennootschap.
“We need to invest in our road network to guarantee smooth and safe traffic,” says Minister Peeters in AWV’s press release. “Fluent traffic is an important motor for our Flemish economy.”
Peeters is convinced that many highway stretches in Flanders need maintenance, safety, capacity, and fluent traffic. Unfortunately, some of the works will cause severe traffic nuisance.
The most disturbing projects are works on the viaduct in Gentbrugge, restoration works on the E313 bridge in Westerlo, maintenance of the express route to Bruges, and installing a rush-hour lane between Leuven and Aarschot on the E314.
Minister Peeters calls on everybody to respect road signs and possible speed limits. “After all, people risk their lives by working on those sites.”
Check before you go
Mobility organization Touring advises people to check the traffic situation before hitting the road. According to Touring, twelve of the planned construction sites will cause severe traffic nuisance, mainly along the E314, E314, E17, and the N31 to Bruges.
