Via Palletto pilot: construction materials delivered by ship
The Flemish Waterway will launch a pilot project to transport construction materials on pallets via inland shipping, the organization announced on Tuesday. The project called ‘Via Palletto’ will provide scheduled trips with fixed stops to combine cargo and transport the materials. Participating partners are Catena Consult, BRIXadvice, Shipit Multimodal Logistics, and Blue Line Logistics.
Construction companies and entrepreneurs are invited to participate in the project. “More transport via water means fewer trucks on the road. Together we can organize the modal shift,” the Flemish Minister for Mobility, Lydia Peeters (Open Vld), says in the Flemish Waterway’s press release.
The construction sector is interested in inland shipping because many producers are situated near the water, and their raw materials often are transported by barges. Thanks to Via Palletto, the transport of pallets via the water is a valuable alternative for the distribution to traders.
The pilot project will be launched shortly on the East-West ( Albert Channel, river Scheldt, Ghent-Terneuzen Channel, among others) and North-South (river Scheldt, Brussels-Scheldt channel, Brussels-Charleroi Channel) axes of the Flemish waterway network. The project should grow into scheduled service of pallet transport of construction materials.
Sustainable transport mode
“We want to gain experience and build out a network for the transport of construction materials on pallets,” explains Carl Verhamme, engineer of Catena Consult. “Inland shipping is a reliable and sustainable transport mode, and clustering cargo is useful for the construction sector.”
