Porsche goes into two-wheelers with new brand Cyklaer
Porsche Digital is expanding its product portfolio together with bicycle manufacturer Storck. In addition, both will address new digital business models in urban mobility with their joint brand Cyklær.
In addition, Porsche’s digital subsidiary is developing an e-bike together with Storck and with the help of component manufacturers Greyp and Fazua.
The first Cyklaer
The goal is to build a platform that offers digital services for the cycling experience. For the launch, Porsche Digital is developing an innovative, sporty e-bike, collaborating with the bicycle manufacturer Storck and the component builders Greyp and Fazua.
According to Porsche, the Cyklær combines a timeless carbon frame with high-quality components and integrated sensors, such as front and rear cameras.
“With Cyklær, we jointly developed an attractive e-bike that really utilizes the possibilities offered by digitalization,” says Markus Storck, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Storck Bicycle GmbH.
“It is sporty and light and, thanks to its e-drive, also ensures a comfortable ride to work. In addition, users can enjoy a host of benchmark-setting features that we will continue to develop further in the future – with their cooperation,” he adds.
A platform for digital solutions
Several digital services can be used via the user’s own smartphone and the Cyklær app. One example is the rear camera function, which enables the cyclist to access a digital rear-view mirror, increasing safety on the road.
In addition, features such as navigation, video recording, and location services are also available. An inductive charging pad on the handlebars ensures riders can charge their smartphone while driving, particularly useful for longer journeys.
These functions are constantly updated and expanded via so-called OTA (over-the-air) updates. Users also have the opportunity to help decide which new digital services will be available in the future.
“The Cyklær bicycle is our first step into this promising and fast-growing market,” says Florian Rothfuss, Head of Customer Innovation at Porsche Digital.
“In the future, we will offer further digital services to enhance the cycling experience, and these will be combined in one platform. Our goal is to make cycling as a whole better connected, safer, and more comfortable for every rider,” he continues.
Porsche Digital is the technology and digital unit of the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer. Its central task is to find and scale new digital business models and optimize existing products.
As of September
The official presentation of the Cyklær brand and the new e-bike will take place at the Eurobike trade fair in Friedrichshafen from 1 to 4 September 2021. There is already a product website (www.cyklaer.de.) where interested customers can order online.
The naked sports bike E-Gravel (with gravel tires) costs €6 999; the versions with ‘streetwear’ (luggage carrier and mudguards, gravel or street tires) come in at €7 299.
Thanks to the integrated Fazua Energy Ride System, the Cyklaer rider can remove the battery and the entire motor unit. Through this innovative system and the fact that the bike structure is fully carbon, the Cyklaer has a low weight for an e-bike.
