TRAXIO: ‘Sales of speed pedelecs 15% down this (wet) summer’
The number of newly registered speed pedelecs in Belgium decreased by 15%. According to car federation TRAXIO, sales figures from June plunged after a strong start in spring, and the statistics for September even got into the red. Do we see the impact of a highly wet summer, or is the market getting saturated?
Last month, only 1 024 new vehicles were registered, -15,4% compared to 2020, and even -23,1% compared to 2019 (1 327 units). Compared to pre-corona times, we can see a decline of -7,8%.
“After the first lockdown, there was a real rush for speed pedelecs, and sale figures peaked,” Filip Rylant, spokesman for TRAXIO explains. Unfortunately, this terrible summer, sales figures dropped significantly. In the first nine months of the year, we registered a -1,1% loss compared to last year, and -7,8% compared to the same period in 2019.”
One of the possible explanations is the cold and wet summer, and also, the popularity of teleworking negatively impacted sales, Rylant continues.
“In Antwerp, we still saw a slight growth of market share (+2%); in East and West Flanders, however, the market share of speed pedelecs shrank (-5%).
