Touring pleads to extend mobility budget for all
Seven out of ten Belgian citizens plead for the introduction of a mobility budget for all employees. Today, only those with a company car can claim it. “By making the formula accessible for all working employees, and adding some improvements, it would become far more popular,” Lorenzo Stefani, spokesperson for Touring told Sud Presse.
The mobility budget was introduced three years ago. The idea was to motivate employees with a company car to trade in the vehicle for more sustainable transport modes. The formula, aiming at more sustainable commuting, however, had little success. Last year, human resources service provider Securex calculated that hardly 4% of employees had opted for a mobility budget.
According to Touring, most Belgian employees (70%) are game for the measure. “They’re willing to combine several modes of transport for commuting because they’re more and more aware that flexible mobility solutions are comfortable. Moreover, they consider the budget an interesting, extralegal advantage,” Touring explained to press agency Belga.
Still, there’s room for improvement, Touring notes. First of all, the measure deserves more and better communication. Now, one out of five employees doesn’t even know whether his boss is willing to offer a mobility budget.
Essential mode of transport
Secondly, the budget needs to be high enough. For most of them (60%), less than 200 euros is unacceptable; one in three even expects 500 euros a month. Especially the age category of workers and employees between 35 and 49 years old want a higher budget.
However, those who drive a company car today are not easy to persuade. They stick to their cars; four out of ten would even change their job if they had to trade in their cars. For many people, the car remains an essential mode of transport.
For all employees
The mobility budget, therefore, should not ban the car but be considered one of the possible mobility solutions. But anyway, according to Touring, the measure should become accessible for all working employees.
