Johan Sauwens (Trots of Bilzen), Mayor of Bilzen and former Flemish Minister, is the new chairman of the Board of Directors of public transport company De Lijn. The Flemish government decided this on Friday, on the proposal of Mobility Minister Lydia Peeters (Open Vld).
Sauwens, who was one of the founders of De Lijn in 1990-1991, replaces Marc Descheemaecker (N-VA); the latter will remain vice-chairman of the company.
Sauwens will be confronted with several challenges. De Lijn saw the number of passengers plummet due to the corona pandemic, while it had to catch up with the digitization and greening of the fleet.
He will leave the mayoral office on April 1st and will become member of the council in Bilzen.
