New glimpse at Volkswagen’s electric sedan ID. Aero

Volkswagen is going to unveil its first fully-electric sedan, the ID. Aero on June 27th, but teases further with a new glimpse and new design sketches of the reproduction model. The ID.Aero – called an answer to Tesla’s Model 3 by some – will be released first in its Chinese livery, where it goes on sale in the second half of 2023. Europe and the US will have to wait.

The sketches show a sleek four-door sedan with an aerodynamic front and roof, which help to reduce energy consumption and increase range. It reminds of the Space Vizzion concept car that was unveiled in 2019. But that was rather a break, and although media at that time predicted a production model by 2021, it didn’t materialize.

In fact, Volkswagen is very stingy with information on the upcoming model, except it is based on the Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB) platform, like all its electric cars. It will be launched in China first, where four-door sedans are still in high demand.

World car for new market segment

The ID.6, shown in Shanghai in both versions in April 2021, was the first model in the ID. family to be developed specifically for the Chinese market, according to VW. It was “tailored specifically to the needs and wishes of Chinese customers in terms of space, functionality, design and, in particular, user experience.”

On the one hand, there is the ID.6 Crozz from the FAW Volkswagen joint venture. It rolls off the production line in northern China. On the other hand, there is the ID.6 X from SAIC Volkswagen in the south.

The new ID. Aero to come, Volkswagen calls the next world car for a new market segment. “The production version of the ID. Aero is expected to go on sale in the Chinese automobile market in the second half of 2023. The corresponding production model for the North American and European markets will be presented in 2023. For those markets, it will be built at the Volkswagen plant in Emden, Germany.
