Ghent will get new bicycle bridge to ‘island of Zwijnaarde’

Ghent will get a new bicycle bridge over the Tijarm, an unnavigable waterway in the province of East Flanders between Zwijnaarde and Merelbeke. The bridge will be a safe and comfortable connection between the industrial zone ‘Eiland Zwijnaarde’ and the Zwijnaardsesteenweg.

Eiland Zwijnaarde is an industrial zone on the ‘island’ of Zwijnaarde with the same name. The zone is shut in by the Zwijnaarde Channel, the Tijarm, and the Ringvaart.

Ready by next summer

The future bicycle bridge will be 88 meters long and six meters wide and will cost more than two million euros. Construction of the concrete structure has started, and the bridge is expected to be ready by next summer. The embankment nearby will be elevated for better protection against high water levels.

“Cycling between Merelbeke and Ghent city will become easier,” explained the Flemish Minister of Mobility, Lydia Peeters (Open Vld) to the press agency Belga. “Thanks to the bridge, cyclists can save time and energy; the cycling distance will be shortened by two kilometers.”

Business park

Also, those who work in the industrial zone ‘island of Zwijnaarde (‘Eiland Zwijnaarde’) will profit from the new construction. The business park is in full expansion and will provide more than 3 000 jobs in logistics and knowledge economy in the future.
