New Suzan Daniel bridge over Brussels channel officially inaugurated

From now on, cyclists, pedestrians, and the buses of public transport company MIVB can use the Suzan Daniel bridge to cross the Brussels-Scheldt channel. The newly inaugurated bridge is an attractive shortcut between Tour & Taxis and the north district. It will be an essential element for the further development of the quarter.

The new Suzan Daniel bridge between Simon Bolivar Avenue, on one side, and Port Avenue, on the other, is a Belgian construction in steel. The heavy steel constructions were manufactured in Ghent and transported to Brussels by an inland vessel. The pedestrian part was built in Courtrai. Project manager Beliris invested 9,4 million euros in the project.

‘Bow String’

The result is a ‘Bow String’ bridge with separated lanes for public transport and vulnerable road users. The 60-meter-long central bridge deck weighs 1 200 tons and has a 7-meter-wide asphalt lane for the buses (for MIVB bus lines 14 and 20) and a 6-meter-wide cyclist and pedestrian zone with wooden floor covering. The entire bridge will eventually be 200 meters long.

The construction works were announced in August 2020. In April 2021, the bridge’s main span was placed over the Brussels canal. Now, after more than two years, the bridge is ready. The name is an homage to the lesbian LGBT rights activist Suzan Daniel, symbolizing the connection between communities.

The bridge was officially inaugurated on Tuesday in the presence of Brussels Minister-President Rudi Vervoort, the Brussels Ministers Elke Van den Brandt (Groen) and Alain Maron (Ecolo), and Brussels Mayor Philippe Close (PS).
