End of 2020, Flemish Minister for Mobility Lydia Peeters (Open Vld) asked local authorities in Flanders to list dangerous traffic situations in school surroundings.
Today, plans are being made for 523 (74%) of the 708 listed locations. Meanwhile, 182 situations have been improved, and 92 projects are still in the pipeline. The planned works include improving bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, installing crosswalks, and providing crossing places for cyclists.
Safe school surroundings
Minister Peeters wants to guarantee parents that their children can walk or cycle safely to school. Schools situated along regional roads can get the help of cities and municipalities.
For schools on municipal roads, local authorities can apply for a financial contribution to improve safety in the school surroundings. Minister Peeters set aside 30 million euros for both initiatives.
