General Motors is introducing another all-electric pickup truck. Like the previous combustion model, the Sierra EV runs under the GMC brand and is based on the Ultium platform. In the full option ‘Denali Edition 1’ outfit, the electric pickup has impressive data and can already be reserved. Delivery, however, will not occur before early 2024.
GM’s GMC brand was the first to introduce an electric pick-up, the Hummer EV. Now the brand launches the Sierra EV, the third from the company alongside the Chevrolet Silverado EV. Despite having the same (Ultium) platform, the Sierra EV surpasses the electric Silverado in terms of technical data: the Chevy has an output of up to 495 kW in the ‘RST First Edition’ top model, the Sierra EV in its highest level has a preliminary output of 562 kW/754 hp according to the press release.
From the side, the Sierra EV design looks fairly simple and resembles that of the Chevrolet Silverado. Nevertheless, GM says that all of Sierra’s sheet metal is unique. Noticeable also: the Sierra EV will be delivered with 24-inch rims. Together with the Chevy, they will be the first production vehicles to offer 24′ rims from the factory.
200 kWh, 800 volts
The battery capacity has the maximum configuration of the Ultium platform, with an energy content of 200 kWh delivered by 24 modules. Therefore, the predicted range, still a provisional value, in the “Denali Edition 1” is 640 kilometers, the same as for the Silverado EV.
The battery can be charged via AC with up to 19.2 kW and via DC with up to 350 kW thanks to an 800-volt system. With the ‘Onboard Power Station Pro’, power for electric utensils can also be drawn from the battery with up to 10,2 kW capacity.
Of course, we’re talking about the GMC Sierra EV ‘Denali Edition 1’ here, the absolute top model. Details on further versions of the Sierra EV, which are to start at prices around $ 50 000 net, will be announced at a later date. The performance of the Chevrolet Silverado EV also differs depending on the selected equipment level.
“This is the Denali of EVs and a truck that is every bit a GMC,” says Duncan Aldred, Vice President of Global Buick and GMC. “That means it leaves nothing on the table when it comes to hauling, towing, and overall power while unlocking even more possibilities around what a GMC pickup can offer.” The towing capacity is an impressive 4,3 tons.
It rides on adaptive air suspension, so the truck can be raised or lowered (2 inches), and offers four-wheel steering in both directions so the truck can drive diagonally, which GM describes as ‘crab walk’.
Reservations for the 2024 GMC Sierra EV are now open, with production set to begin soon at GM’s Factory Zero, the company’s first dedicated EV production facility, located in Detroit. Electric GMCs should begin arriving at dealers in early 2024.
At the start, GMC will only offer fully-loaded Sierra EV Edition 1 models, with an eye-popping starting price of $ 107 000. That’s mighty steep for a pick-up truck, but GMC says lower-tier Sierra EVs, like the AT4 and Elevated trims, will start at around $ 50 000, a bit more in line with one of its biggest competitors, the Ford F-150 Lightning.
