Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM) and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), both wholly owned subsidiaries of Tata Motors Limited (TML), have signed an agreement to share JLR’s new platform for EVs, called EMA.
It will first be used in the Avinya, which, as it turns out, will not remain a single EV but become a ‘Premium Pure Electric’ vehicle series. Tata presented the Avinya Concept last year, and it is supposed to go into series production in 2025. At the time, it was said that the Avinya would be based on the Tata Pure EV platform. But that was before the license agreement concluded with JLR.
“TPEM has decided to use the technology we’re developing both in terms of the EMA architecture, our electrical architecture, and our battery packs to produce their range of premium BEV vehicles at their plant in India. So it’s them producing their vehicles using our intellectual property,” JLR CEO Adrian Mardell told the British car magazine Autocar.
According to earlier information, the EMA platform for the next generation of all-electric mid-size SUVs from JLR, which will launch in 2025, uses 800-volt technology. Tata also mentions cell-to-pack battery technology in its latest announcement. The EMA platform will also underpin the next-generation Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar, and Land Rover Discovery Sport.
Autocar also reports that the batteries for the platform will come from Tata’s UK plant in Bridgewater, scheduled to kick off production in 2026. Moreover, Tata says it will not just launch a single model under the name Avinya but an entire ‘Premium Pure Electric’ vehicle series.
