Mullen Five RS: another 1.000-hp ‘race-ready’ American EV

Mullen Automotive, a US-based manufacturer mostly specialized in converting Chinese EVs for its domestic market, has brought a self-developed high-performance electric crossover to CES 2024 in Las Vegas. The Mullen Five RS promises over 1 000 horsepower, 0-100 km/hour in less than two seconds, and a 2025 launch.

Those figures sound promising, but Mullen Automotive’s track record is far from perfect. The company emerged from the ashes of Coda Automotive in 2016, one of the first US-based electric vehicle ‘manufacturers’, which sold the Coda sedan, a four-door EV based on the Chinese Hafei Saibao. The model never caught on, causing Coda to collapse and re-emerge as Mullen Automotive.

The sole self-developed model

Mullen has continued the same trend, rebadging models from Wuling Motors, SAIC Motor, and Qiantu to the Mullen model range. Only the Mullen Five is a self-developed electric crossover, which was first shown in 2020 and hasn’t made it to market yet.

Now, Mullen Automotive has brought the Five RS to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 in Las Vegas. The sporty version of the crossover not only gets more power, but the front, and rear fascia have also been completely redesigned. In contrast, the model gets an imposing body kit highlighting its racy ambitions.

Over 1 000 hp

Under the hood, the Mullen Five RS uses a “more than 1 000-hp” drivetrain, allowing the 2,3-ton heavy crossover to shoot from 0 to 100 km/hour in under two seconds.

The top speed apparently exceeds 200 mph (322 km/h), while a 100 kWh battery offers over 300 miles (483 km) of range. There’s fast charging, too, thanks to an 800 V architecture for the battery pack.

Mullen promises that the Five RS will make it to market by the end of 2025 for a base price of $295 000 (€269 000). Let’s wait and see…
