Renault Scenic is Car of the Year 2O24

The new Renault Scenic E-Tech Electric has been proclaimed the Car of the Year 2024 in a ceremony that took place at the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS).

The Renault Scenic E-Tech has achieved first place thanks to 329 points from 58 journalists and COTY members. For 22 jurors, this SUV was the best of the seven finalists.

This is the seventh time Renault has won the Car of the Year trophy, which started in 1964 and celebrates its 61st edition. Previous Renault winners were the Renault 16 (1966), Renault 9 (1982), Clio (1991), Scenic (1997), Megane (2003), and Clio (2006).

Close combat

The BMW 5-Series is second and has been close to Renault Scenic, with a total of 308 points and 19 best votes, followed by the new Peugeot 3008, third, with 197 points and 3 best votes.

The rest of the finalists for the award were the Kia EV9 (190 points), Volvo EX30 (168), BYD Seal (131), and Toyota C-HR (127).

In this edition, four of the seven finalist models were completely electric, including the winner, and the other three had completely electric and/or plug-in versions in the model line-up.

When we take a brief look at the voting grid, one can see that the more northern countries and Germany (of course) preferred the BMW and the more southern the Renault.

For 7 jurors, the Kia EV9 merited first place, while the only Chinese contender, the BYD Seal, still has to win the confidence of the (European) journalists. Only one juror, Michael McAleer, the only Irish journalist on the jury, gave it first place: “This car has been the biggest surprise of the year so far. We were expecting just another solid but forgettable Chinese EV. Amid the crowd, this car really stood out.”

Returning to Geneva

On this occasion, the Car of the Year ceremony returned to the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS) after being held at the Brussels International Motor Show in 2023. The latter didn’t take place in 2024.

The Car of the Year award ceremony was again held in Geneva at the press day of the international motor show /Car of the Year

The GIMS is organized for the first time again since the outbreak of the pandemic and is far smaller than previous editions. Only three of the six halls are occupied. Among the larger European car manufacturers, only Renault Group is present and launches a very important car, the new Renault 5 Electric.

Only nine major brands will be present in Geneva: apart from Renault and Dacia, BYD will be there, along with its subbrands Denza and Yangweng, Lucid, MG, and new SAIC brand IM, and the Italian design house Pininfarina.

The Jury for the Car of the Year 2024 has been made up of 58 members, representing 22 countries, with the objective of finding the best new car on sale. Since the outbreak of the Ukrainian conflict, the Russian jurors don’t have the right to vote anymore.
