Makro site Machelen will become parking lot for Tesla cars

The Makro site in Machelen will be used as a storage facility for Tesla cars until the end of this year. Tesla is allowed to store a maximum of 1,400 cars there, pending further distribution to car dealers and buyers.

The site will also be monitored, insured, and maintained so that the nuisance will end,” says Mayor Jean-Pierre De Groef (Samen Vooruit). “The site will be fenced, and there will be cameras.”

It is possible that other car manufacturers will also temporarily use the space to stock some of their cars if necessary.

Last year, Makro, a wholesaler for catering professionals, stopped its activities in Belgium, and all shops were closed. In the future, retail activities will resume on the 11-hectare site. For example, there will be stores with a range unavailable in local stores. The gas station will also remain. But in the meantime, the location is deserted.

Litter and vandalism

As a result, the site has become an attraction for litter and vandalism. The municipality has approved a temporary different site use to prevent further deterioration. Similar temporary activities are also underway at other Makro sites in Belgium.

In the coming months, the site’s owner will continue to prepare the final new plans and submit the environmental permit. That should happen by the end of this year.
