Eurostat: ‘Renewables main source of electricity in 2023’

According to figures from the European statistics agency Eurostat, renewable energy was the most important source of electricity in the European Union in 2023.  The supply of renewables – sun and wind – increased by 4.4% compared to 2022, and the amount of electricity produced by renewables increased by 12.4%.

Last year, renewable energy represented 44.7% of all electricity produced. Fossil energy accounted for 32.5% of total electricity production (a decrease of 19.7% compared to the previous year), and nuclear power plants generated 22.8% of EU electricity, slightly more than in 2022).

Lowest natural gas since 1995

The EU’s natural gas supply decreased by 7.4%, marking the lowest value since 1995. Brown coal supply significantly reduced by 24.2% to 222,840 million tons, and hard coal supply dropped by 20.4% to 130,437 million tons. Both figures are the lowest recorded since the data series began.

The oil and petroleum products supply showed a 1.5% drop compared with 2022.
