Volvo EX90 finally makes its way to customers

Nearly two years after its unveiling, the Volvo EX90 is starting to reach customers. Software delays postponed the launch of the electric 7-seater SUV by around a year. The first United States and Europe customers are getting their cars this month, with deliveries ramping up between Q4 2024 and Q1 2025.

The Volvo EX90 is the electric equivalent of the XC90, Volvo’s large family SUV. It is still on sale and will soon get a comprehensive facelift to extend its life by another few years. The EX90 was first unveiled in November 2022, and production and delivery of the flagship model was planned for 2023.

Software delays

Unfortunately, like the Volkswagen Group, which also lived through its PPE platform, software issues with the shared electric platform between the Volvo EX90 and Polestar 3 pushed back the delivery date of both SUVs by around six months to a year. Now, Volvo has finally announced the first deliveries of the EX90 to customers in the US and Europe.

However, Volvo doesn’t specify which European markets are lucky to receive the first EX90s. We have contacted Volvo Car Belgium for more details and await their response.

The all-electric Volvo EX90 started production in Volvo’s South Carolina, US, factory in June 2024. Chinese production of the model was also planned, but might not happen due to the increased tariffs in Europe /Volvo

Slow roll-out

It seems like not many models will be ready for delivery this month. Volvo mentions that deliveries will be ramped up between Q4 2024 and Q1 2025, with more markets also getting their EX90s in this period.

In Belgium, the Volvo EX90 starts at €86,320 for the Core trim with a Single Motor powertrain, which features a 580 km WLTP range. A Twin Motor drivetrain with all-wheel drive is available from the Plus trim, featuring a slightly larger battery (107 kWh vs. 101 kWh usable capacity) to increase the range to 619 km.

Volvo CEO Jim Rowan drove the EX90 from the factory in South Carolina, US, to California, where the global press could try out the model for the first time. He commented: “After driving it for 950 kilometers through three states in the US in various driving conditions and road surfaces, I only have positive memories. The charging, the handling, the ride comfort, the silence of the cabin and the epic sound system, the reliability, the tech, and the feel of the UI – I’ve never driven a Volvo car like it. The EX90 is the start of a new era for Volvo Cars, and it begins now.”
