IAA: MAN completes electric truck range with 12-tonne eTGL

Following the larger eTGS and eTGX models, MAN has now electrified its 12-tonne distribution truck to create the eTGL. It features a range of up to 235 km, a payload of up to 6.6 tonnes, and a fast charging time of around 30 minutes. The new MAN eTGL will make its debut at the IAA Transportation 2024 in Hannover.

In November 2023, MAN unveiled the production versions of its 42-tonne eTGS and eTGX long-range electric heavy trucks. These trucks feature a “daily” range of up to 800 km, including a charging stop. Megawatt charging (MCS) is also available for fast charging during mandatory breaks.

Modular battery pack from larger models

Now, the electric range has been expanded downward with the introduction of the MAN eTGL, a 12-tonne battery-electric distribution truck. It uses the same modular battery packs as its bigger brothers, with two packs of 80 kWh for a total of 160 kWh, allowing for a range of around 235 km.

Thanks to a CCS connector, charging is possible up to 250 kW, taking the battery from 10 to 80% state of charge (SoC) in around 30 minutes. The drive unit consists of a 210-kW (286-hp) electric motor and a two-speed gearbox mounted centrally in the frame.

Similar payload to diesel

In terms of dimensions, the MAN eTGL has a 4,500-mm wheelbase, compared to the diesel-powered TGL’s 3,050 to 5,200 mm, with a body length of 6,200 to 7,300 mm. The 12-tonne truck has a payload of up to 6,600 kg, comparable to the diesel versions.

The MAN eTGL’s day cab is similar to that of the ‘regular’ TGL, with a low entry to aid the frequent entry and exit of distribution work. A central 12.3-inch touchscreen displays all the necessary information on the battery charge status, range, and energy requirements.

The MAN eTGL will make its public debut at the IAA Transportation in Hannover, from 16 to 22 September 2024, and will be available for sale from April 2025.
