BMW just released more information about its model offer update for the autumn and winter of 2024. Just a few weeks after the new BMW 1 Series launches, another two model variants will be available from November 2024.
At the same time, the line-up of drive systems for the BMW i5 Touring and BMW 5 Series Touring will be expanded with the addition of one more fully electric variant, one plug-in-hybrid, and one four-cylinder gasoline model.
An almost 50% increase in charging power will also optimize the potential for locally emission-free driving in the plug-in-hybrid variants of the BMW 5 Series, BMW X5, and the new BMW M5. New functions will again be offered via Remote Software Upgrades.
New entry-level model for 1 Series
From November 2024, the new BMW 116 will be the entry point to BMW’s compact class. This new variant has a 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine with a maximum output of 90 kW/122 hp and peak torque of 230 Nm, driving the front wheels via a seven-speed Steptronic transmission with the double clutch as standard. The new BMW 116 accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 9.8 seconds. CO2 emissions, combined: 146-135 g/km in the WLTP cycle.
The BMW 1 Series line-up also welcomes a new all-wheel-drive option. The new BMW 123 xDrive is powered by an electrified four-cylinder drive unit featuring 48 V mild hybrid technology. Its system output of 160 kW/218 hp combines a gasoline engine with up to 150 kW/204 hp and an integrated electric motor with up to 14 kW/19 hp. The new BMW 123 xDrive sprints from 0 to 100 kph in 6.3 seconds and emits 145-134 g/km in the WLTP cycle.
Finally, an M Technology Package will be available exclusively for the new BMW M135 xDrive starting November 2024. It will bring additional bracing elements and lightweight construction measures, plus specific chassis components that give the range-topping 1 Series model bespoke performance characteristics.
Three additional drive variants for 5 Series Touring
The line-up of drive systems for the new BMW 5 Series Touring will also be expanded in November 2024. The new BMW 520i Touring teams the latest version of the four-cylinder gasoline engine with 48 V mild hybrid technology to generate a maximum output of 140 kW/190 hp and a peak torque of 310 Nm.
These figures can be raised to a maximum of 153 kW/208 hp and 330 Nm courtesy of the mild hybrid system’s crankshaft-driven starter generator. The new BMW 520i Touring powers from 0 to 100 kph in 7.8 seconds, and its CO2 emissions, combined, amount to 153-137 g/km in the WLTP cycle.
The new BMW 550e xDrive Touring, a six-cylinder in-line gasoline engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology from the BMW Group’s new generation of modular engines, joins forces with the latest version of BMW eDrive technology for plug-in-hybrid systems. The 3.0-liter engine produces a nominal output of 230 kW/313 hp and a nominal torque of 450 Nm.
The electric motor developed for the hybrid drive system is integrated directly into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. It contributes up to 145 kW/197 hp to the peak system output of 360 kW/489 hp. With the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system on board, the new BMW 550e xDrive Touring powers from rest to 100 kph in 4.4 seconds.
Adding a third fully electric model variant to the line-up, the new BMW i5 xDrive40 Touring combines one highly integrated electric drive unit at the front axle and one at the rear axle to create electric all-wheel drive and channel system output of up to 290 kW/394 hp and peak torque of 590 Nm.
It accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 5.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 215 km/h (134 mph). Its high-voltage battery produces 81.2 kWh of usable energy. The Combined Charging Unit enables AC charging at a rate of up to 11 kW as standard and up to 22 kW as an option. This allows DC charging at fast-charging stations at up to 205 kW.
All plug-in hybrid versions of the BMW 5 Series and the BMW X5 xDrive50e now benefit from higher AC charging rates. The increase from 7.4 kW to 11 kW enables users to replenish their cars’ high-voltage batteries in a significantly shorter time.
New Remote Software upgrades
New and improved functions will be available for current BMW models in autumn 2024 via Remote Software Upgrades and installed in the car over the air (OTA). The features will be selected specifically for the model variant, vehicle specification, and BMW Operating System version.
Fuelling and charging from public charging stations is now more accessible and convenient for cars with the BMW Operating System 9. At all participating filling stations, customers in Germany can now pay for their fuel digitally from their vehicles.
Furthermore, BMW Operating System 9 simplifies searching for public charging stations for fully electric and plug-in hybrid models. A new ‘quick filter’ allows users to select their desired charging station with extra speed and ease. Charging stations can now also be filtered according to preferred operators. Stations with restricted access and more detailed information on the chosen location are also shown.
