Xiaomi to come with quad-motor system and ‘dancing’ suspension

Xiaomi, China’s smartphone giant, has quickly become an EV carmaker to reckon with. It has revealed details of its next-generation intelligent chassis, featuring a 2,054 hp quad-motor system.

Still, the system’s most remarkable ability is to spin around on the spot, make a complete circle with one wheel remaining in the same place, jump up with its four wheels off the ground while standing still, or start ‘dancing’ like a cat on a hot tin roof.

On November 14, Xiaomi EV announced four pre-research smart chassis technologies: Xiaomi Full Active Suspension, Xiaomi Hyper Quad-Motor System, Xiaomi 48 V Brake-by-Wire System, and Xiaomi 48 V Steer-by-Wire System. In a 14-minute presentation video, Xiaomi’s founder and CEO, Lei Jun, demonstrated its capabilities.

The quad-motor system consists of two newly developed front motors and two V8s rear motors, delivering a combined output of 2,054 hp. By operating the wheels independently, the car can turn on the spot, combined with the 48 V Steer-by-Wire technology.

According to Chinese media, it also uses the world’s first 48 V full-dry brake-by-wire system, upgraded from 12 V. This reduces low-voltage power losses by 75%, resulting in faster response times and improved safety. It has ‘fully-dry’ dual piston electric calipers to clamp on the brake disc for precise electronic control and more braking power.

Jumping up into the air

However, the most remarkable feature is Xiaomi’s Full Active Suspension. That suspension gives each wheel a 4.6 kW motor and dual-valve CDC (Continuous Damping Control). Those boast a lifting force of up to 44,400 N, capable of lifting, in theory, two of the 2.2-ton weighing SU7 Max cars.

It is meant to eliminate bumps in the road very effectively and has zero body roll and zero pitch, providing superior comfort and exceptional stability in extreme conditions.

But your Xiaomi SU7 Max will probably attract a great deal of attention if you can have it shake its body like a wet dog, jump up with its four wheels in the air on the spot, or dance with its four ‘legs’ individually like a cat on a hot tin roof, as Lei Jun demonstrates in this video.
