British Centrica acquires Terhills battery park in Limburg

The Limburg Investment Company (LRM) sells its Terhills battery park in Dilsen-Stokkem to the British energy and services company Centrica. Financial details about the acquisition have not been disclosed.

Terhills was the first large battery park in Belgium to be used in 2018. Its capacity of 18 megawatts was a European first. The 140 Tesla Powerpacks were intended to store green energy and release it at the right time to create balance on the power grid.

High-voltage grid

Centrica has optimized the batteries over the past six years and is completely taking over the battery park. “We will continue to maximize the output of the batteries, provide a backup to the high-voltage grid, and encourage the growth of solar and wind energy in Belgium,” said Centrica Power CEO Chris O’Shea.

The British group Centrica has been active in the Belgian market since 2017. It is building a 24-megawatt battery park in Ostend and is responsible for operationalizing several other large battery parks.

The Belgian market for battery parks is growing rapidly. There is an increasing need for storage capacity for energy during times of high consumption.
