Lamborghini latest brand to postpone electric

Lamborghini’s first EV, likely a production version of the Lanzador concept car, won’t show up in 2028. According to remarks from CEO Stephan Winkelmann, the Italian manufacturer will release its first fully electric model in 2029 at the earliest, citing low market interest in electric sports cars.

Although Lamborghini has partly embraced the electrification of its range by launching hybrid successors to the popular Huracán (Temerario) and Aventador (Revuelto) supercars and introducing a plug-in hybrid version of its sporty SUV, the Urus SE, a fully electric model, will have to wait a little longer, as seems to be the trend right now.

Taking a shot at Ferrari?

Indeed, Lamborghini’s head honcho, Stephan Winkelmann, is quoted by several media as saying, “We do not think 2029 is too late to have an electric car. We do not think that, in our segment, the market will be ready in 2025 or 2026.” This a subtle dig at eternal rival Ferrari, which is unveiling its first electric model in 2025, with a market launch scheduled for 2026.

In any case, this only delays Lamborghini’s initial plans by about a year. However, the manufacturer is also waiting on clarity from the EU concerning synthetic fuels after the 2035 combustion engine ban. I

If these ‘sustainable’ fuels (which need 100% clean energy to earn this moniker) are allowed, “We think this is the right way to face the future” to keep combustion engines in Lamborghini models, according to Winkelmann.

Lanzador as first EV in 2029

Lamborghini’s first electric vehicle is set to be the production version of the Lanzador, a four-seat high-performance grand tourer with a raised ride height. According to Lamborghini’s original plans, it would precede the electric successor to the  Urus SUV, swapping the V8 engine built by Porsche for batteries.

Speaking of Porsche, the German sports brand, like Bentley, Ford, Lotus, and several others, has also announced a delay in its electrification plans earlier this year.

Seeing as collaboration between the VW Group’s luxury brands for electric powertrains will likely be key to make the R&D affordable, it comes as no surprise that Lamborghini is also putting the launch of the Lanzador on ice.
