Most searched car brands worldwide are Toyota, Tesla, and BMW

According to the latest annual ‘Most Searched Cars report‘ from Australian insurer Compare the Market AU, Toyota is the most sought-after brand on the internet. Tesla slowly closes in on the number one spot, narrowing the gap to Toyota, while BMW stays in third position.

Toyota was the most searched car brand in 64 nations, a decrease from 69 two years ago. Meanwhile, Tesla has risen from 29 countries to 34 nations this year, reducing the gap. Based on the last few years of data, Tesla may replace Toyota as the world’s most searched car brand in 2031.

BYD surged into the rankings for the first time thanks to its top-selling EVs, which took the globe by storm. The Chinese electric and hybrid manufacturer was already the most searched brand in Uzbekistan and Nepal.

Meanwhile, Lexus and Volvo were completely knocked off the rankings in 2024, while Ford returned after being booted from the list in 2022.

In 2023, Toyota was the number-one brand in 64 countries, and that hasn’t changed this year. However, Tesla rose from being the number-one brand in 29 countries in 2023 to 34 in 2024, closing the gap on the Japanese auto giant.

Once again, BMW came in third and made gains, rising from being the number one brand in 26 countries in 2023 to 30 in 2024. Of course, this is peanuts compared to 2019, when the Bavarians were number one in almost 120 countries.

Improvements were seen across the rest of the pack, with Fiat, Hyundai, Nissan, Honda, Chevrolet, Mazda, Peugeot, and Suzuki all improving, while Kia and Mercedes-Benz saw noticeable declines.

BYD was the most searched car brand in Nepal and Uzbekistan. It was the third-most searched brand in China after BMW and Toyota. Chinese electric cars have significantly increased in popularity, with BYD now manufacturing more vehicles than Tesla.1

In any case, the other brands will have to do something special to replace Toyota as the most searched car brand online. Toyota has an excellent pedigree and reputation for reliability, and it offers a wide range of models to suit buyers worldwide.

Toyota continues to do well worldwide, but especially in Africa, Asia, parts of the Middle East, and South America. Tesla was the number one brand in several countries, including the US and Canada, South Korea, Scandinavian countries, other parts of Europe, and some parts of Africa. On the other hand, BMW dominated Europe and some parts of the Middle East and was the number-one car brand in China.
