Belgium’s most significant cable broadband service provider, Telenet, plans to offer a bicycle-sharing point on its property in Mechelen. Blue-bike shared bicycles can usually be found in public places in Mechelen, such as the station areas. Soon, the company will provide this type of shared mobility on-site at its headquarters for every employee and also the general public to use.
With the initiative, Telenet wants to stimulate sustainable mobility even more. The new bicycle point provides a better connection from Mechelen North to other vital junctions in the city. Telenet also makes bicycle sharing entirely free for employees who mainly travel to work by train.
‘Last mile’
Sven De Cremer, responsible for Rewards & Benefits at Telenet: “Sustainable mobility can only succeed if we make it as simple and attractive as possible. With this initiative, we offer a strong answer to the ‘last mile’ train passengers must travel.”
Bue-bike’s bicycle sharing project was founded in 2011 by the NMBS/SNCB to shape combined mobility in practice. Bicycle sheds were, therefore, permanently installed at train stations, bus stops, and car parks. For Blue-bike, it is the first time they will work directly with a commercial company to install a bicycle point.
Climate-neutral by 2030
With the mobility platform on Telenet’s premises, the city of Mechelen will have a fifth Blue-bike point. Approximately 170 shared bicycles from Blue-bike will be available in the city.
This project illustrates how companies can contribute substantially to sustainable mobility and a better quality of life in the city. It also fits perfectly with Mechelen’s ambition to become climate-neutral by 2030.
