Ineos opens one of Belgium’s largest solar farms in Wallonia

British chemical giant Ineos inaugurated the largest solar park in Wallonia on Thursday in Jemeppe-sur-Sambre, in the province of Namur. Over 100 guests, including Sophie Wilmès, Vice-President of the European Parliament, and Cécile Neven, Walloon Minister for Energy and the Air-Climate Plan, attended the inauguration.

The Ineos Park will cover a 30-hectare zone—the equivalent of about 56 soccer fields. Featuring over 90,000 solar panels, the project represents a 50-million-euro investment. Production capacity will be 60 MW, and annual CO2 emissions will be reduced by 14,000 tons.

‘Sustainable infrastructure’

Cécile Neven: “This project is much more than an investment in sustainable infrastructure. It embodies the determination of Ineos Inovyn, a key player in the chemical industry, to do everything possible to achieve our climate objectives.”

The new solar farm includes a range of innovative features, from the use of the latest-generation Heterojunction panels, which provide higher levels of efficiency, to an underground power line connection with Jemeppe’s plant and central inverters, which are more reliable, economical, and durable.

Low carbon footprint

Ineos Inovyn developed this project in partnership with PerPetum Energy, a Belgian family business founded in 2007, and Green4Power (70% owned by PerPetum Energy Holding), two key players in the industrial decarbonization market.

Ineos’ investment will have repercussions well beyond Jemeppe, across the entire PVC value chain: by providing PVC and chlor-alkali products with a low carbon footprint, the multinational will also enable its customers to offer low-carbon solutions in other sectors and to achieve their own greenhouse gas reduction targets.
