Sustainable energy producer Eneco has built Belgium’s largest battery park in Ville-sur-Haine in the province of Hainaut (Wallonia). Last Friday, the press was invited to visit the site.
The site housed a coal-fired power station until the 1980s. Now, it has 53 batteries that can store 200 MW of electricity. The batteries will store excess energy and release it when needed. Eneco’s battery park is directly connected to Elia’s transmission grid.
“The batteries will be used to improve the balance of the high-voltage grid managed by Elia,” explained Miguel de Schaetzen, CEO of Eneco Wind Belgium.
200 MW hours of storage capacity
The park in the industrial zone in Ville-sur-Haine involves 53 Megabucks battery units from Tesla, which is also responsible for building and maintaining the site. The site will have 50 megawatts of energy capacity and 200 megawatt hours of storage capacity. By comparison, that is roughly equivalent to charging 3,000 electric cars or the annual consumption of 57 families.
Work on the battery park started two years ago and cost Eneco 80 million euros. The site is secured and managed remotely. It will be put into use on November 22nd.
