Genesis unveils first production EV with Electrified G80
Korean manufacturer and luxury brand of the Hyundai Motor Company, Genesis, has unveiled its first-ever EV at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show. The new Electrified G80 comes with an all-wheel drive, 272 kW (370 hp) of power, and an estimated range of more than 500 km.
The Hyundai Motor Company is continuing with its big EV plans for each of its brands. Hyundai recently launched the Ioniq 5, then followed Kia with the EV6, and now is the premium brand Genesis’ turn to launch its first EV with the Electrified G80.
+500 km range
Unlike its two sister companies, Genesis isn’t using the group’s new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) for its new electric car. Rather, it is adapting the current fossil fuel-powered G80 to electric drive.
No words from Genesis at the moment on the battery size, but it is said to have a capacity of 87,2 kWh. According to NEDC standards, it should provide the Electrified G80 with enough energy for more than 500 km. Genesis prefers to bring the news with a pinch of salt and estimates the range to 427 km.
Despite not sharing the new platform, the first-ever electric Genesis still profits from these technologies. It can vary between 400 and 800 volts and provide the “vehicle-to-load” function to charge electric appliances at 3,6 kW.
Talking about charge, Genesis says that thanks to its max 350 kW fast charging capability, the Electrified G80 can be topped up from 10 to 80% in just 22 minutes. A solar panel on the roof can also generate additional electricity.
Eco-friendly and PET
Outside, only a trained eye can spot the difference between this electric and other ICE G80s. There’s a new, blanked-off grill that hides the charge port and no tailpipes at the back. Inside, it’s business as usual except for eco-friendly wood trim, naturally dyed leather, and recycled PET fabrics.
Under the skin hide two 136 kW electric motors, one of each axel, for a combined output of 272 kW (370 hp) and 700 Nm of torque. According to Genesis, the Electrified G80 can sprint to 100 km/hour in 4,9 seconds.
Full technical specifications and pricing will be revealed upon the Electrified G80’s market launch in the USA, Canada, and other markets later this year. For the moment, it won’t come to Europe.
