Flanders starts first pilot ‘Hoppin’ center in Puurs

The Hoppin center’s pilot project, a platform responsible for planning, booking, and paying for public transport in Flanders, will start today in the Klein-Brabant (Puurs, Sint-Amands, and Bornem) bell bus area. The pilot project marks the phased roll-out of the Basic Accessibility Plan, a major public transport reform in Flanders.

With the mobility brand Hoppin, all available mobility solutions in Flanders become more recognizable in the street scene, making it easier for commuters to combine transport options.

1 000 mobility points

With the pilot project, public transport company De Lijn and VIA, the operator of the Hoppin center, want to test whether VIA’s software is optimally tuned to the needs of the on-call bus users and whether the planning of the on-call bus rides runs smoothly.

Based on the findings of this trial, De Lijn and VIA will make any necessary adjustments and determine when reservations for other on-call buses will also be made via the Hoppin center.

Flemish Minister of Mobility and Public Works Lydia Peeters (Open Vld) will make 100 million euros available for some 1 000 mobility points in Flanders this legislature.

The Basic Accessibility Plan will be implemented in phases from January 2023. The concept should provide more demand-driven public transport on four levels: train network, core network, supplementary network, and tailor-made transport.

Booking via app

The Klein-Brabant on-call bus area has 164 registered users. Customers received a letter in October with all the necessary information, and De Lijn also provides information at the affected stops and on its website. The regular, current on-call buses and drivers will continue to provide transport.

Anyone wanting to book a bell bus in the Klein-Brabant bell bus area will call the Hoppin center or book via the Hoppin app. The Hoppin center will schedule the necessary bell bus rides based on the requested bookings. Before your ride, the exact pick-up time is confirmed via text message, phone, or the app.

You can follow your flex live on a map via the app and afterward rate your ride via the feedback form to optimize Hoppin. The flexes can be booked from 30 days to 1 day in advance via the app and by phone up to 30 minutes before your ride during Hoppin’s opening hours.
