Hongqi launches convertible EV at Beijing Auto Show

Chinese luxury brand Hongqi brings out the big guns at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show with new models and concept cars. The brand is officially launching the EH7 Convertible, a new open-top version of the EH7 electric sedan launched a month ago.

The sub-brand of Chinese FAW Group also showcased three concept cars. The E702 is a large luxury limo, while the E009 and E007 are sedans and SUVs, both part of the brand’s New Energy category.

Large open-top EV

Electric convertibles are somewhat hard to spot today; however, they make sense. Hongqi must have thought the same, as the Chinese brand launched the new EH7 Convertible at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. Based heavily on the EH7 electric sedan, this open-top version retains the large proportions (nearly 5 meters long and 2 meters wide).

It also uses the same design: a smooth front end, sharp headlights in the shape of a 7, and a massive rear light bar. Inside, the dashboard presents the same curved screen with a 6-inch instrument cluster and a 15.5-inch touchscreen for the infotainment.

The same platform and drivetrains are under that new two-door open-top body. Two powertrains are available. The entry-level offers 253 kW (343 hp) combined with a 75-kWh battery, giving it a 600 km range (CLTC). Another more powerful version gets two electric motors, 455 kW (618 hp) and 756 Nm of torque. It gets to 100 kph in only 3.9 seconds, and its large 111 kWh battery gives it a range of 800 km (CLTC).

Three concepts and three categories

The 2024 Beijing Auto Show is also an opportunity for Hongqi to showcase future models and continue to explain its future categories. The Chinese brand will divide its models into three categories: Golden Sunflower, Energy Saving, and New Energy. While this might read like a badly translated menu from a street vendor in Beijing, Hongqi is sticking with it and will fill these categories with different models, including these three concept cars.

Luxury limo

The E702 is the largest of the three Hongqi concepts showcased at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. It features the brand’s signature massive grill and the distinctive red bar on the bonnet. Inside, there’s plenty of space in this president-like luxury limousine, meaning this concept could hint at the second-generation H9.

Close-to-production sedan and SUV

After launching the EH7 in March, Hongqi presents the New Energy E009. Slightly smaller than its sister, this sedan features a much sharper design language as well as a different logo at the front. With its door mirrors and hidden door handle, it looks suspiciously ready for production.

The same could be said of the last concept car, the Hongqi New Energy E007. In all fairness, it could be said that this new crossover carries the E009 design into the shape of an SUV. There is a much deeper stance, no grill, and the same clean lines. Both cars even seem to share the same triangular-shaped alloys. Like the E009, this E007 could be ready for production before the end of the year.
