Infrabel uses VR to sensitize youngsters to rail walking dangers

Belgian rail network manager Infrabel has launched a new VR movie to ask young people to be careful around railroads. After all, a recent survey showed that 48% of Belgians are willing to walk on the tracks even though safety rules are generally known.

In 2023, this led to eleven deaths and nine serious injuries from accidents at railroad crossings. “Belgians know the traffic rules well but underestimate the risks and are willing to engage in dangerous behavior,” states Infrabel.

‘Don’t meet near the tracks’

The VR film tells the story of teenagers picnicking near the tracks. One of them decides to take photos near the tracks and is killed when she is hit by a train. The film ends with audio testimonies of young people dealing with the consequences of such an accident.

Infrabel has been using VR technology since 2019 to immerse young people and adults in the general risks around level crossings and railroads. The VR approach does bear fruit, Infrabel says.

It’s a way to communicate a simple message impactfully. “The lesson is very simple: don’t meet near the tracks,” says spokesperson Frédéric Petit. “Don’t do stupid things, respect traffic rules at level crossings always, and don’t walk along the tracks. Just use common sense and always respect safety.”

60 school ambassadors

The new film will be distributed strategically but can be shown at the schools’ request. “We have trained about 60 people within Infrabel as ambassadors, who can start giving lessons in the area where they live,” says Petit.

In addition to the new VR film, Infrabel is launching the nation’s ‘Not Spot’ campaign on September 16th during Mobility Week to encourage people to look for safer places to meet. Infrabel also offers free educational programs for schools focused on rail safety for different age groups.
