Hyundai’s RN24 concept takes electric driving to hefty rally levels

Hyundai is pushing the envelope of high-performance EVs with its newly unveiled RN24 concept, a radical reimagining of the electric rally car. Showcased at this year’s N Day, the RN24 borrows the potent dual-motor powertrain from the Ioniq 5 N, now fitted within a rally-inspired chassis that emphasizes agility, power, and then some. This is one of the few EVs where range isn’t mentioned…

Built with an 84 kWh battery and the same motorsport-ready electric platform as the Ioniq 5 N, the RN24 delivers an impressive 650 horsepower. Yet the RN24 isn’t just about raw power; Hyundai’s engineers have stripped down the vehicle to weigh around 1,880 kilograms, making it roughly 400 kilograms lighter than the Ioniq 5 N. This weight reduction is primarily thanks to a compact, rally-style frame and high-rigidity subframes, which bring the car’s size and handling closer to Hyundai’s i20 rally cars.

Drifting with high precision

“Never just drive,” reads the slogan on the rear spoiler. Fitted with advanced torque vectoring, the RN24’s drivetrain optimally distributes torque to all four wheels, simulating rally dynamics via its “Rally Mode.” This driving mode, influenced by the i20 N Rally1 Hybrid, allows the RN24 to drift with precision, a treat for rally enthusiasts and those looking for an exhilarating driving experience.

As mentioned above, with a WRC-style suspension and 3D-printed gussets to support weight reduction, Hyundai has created a rally-capable machine that offers serious performance in a compact, subcompact hatchback size.

Regarding aesthetics, the RN24 looks like a bare cage supplemented with wheel arches and a powertrain. The 19-inch matte black forged wheels, the LED lighting inspired by the Inster, and that towering rear spoiler straight from Hyundai’s Touring Car Racing (TCR) models all refer to the brand’s racing efforts.

“Rolling Lab”

More than one element of the RN24 surely will spark debate. For example, the included Active Sound+ system simulates engine noise through external speakers, which is an unusual touch for a high-performance EV. The added side speakers and a rear fender soundbox aim to immerse onlookers in a “racing soundtrack,” but this artificial noise might feel out of place for purists.

According to Joon Park, Vice President of Hyundai’s N Brand Management, the RN24 represents Hyundai N’s commitment to prioritizing the driving experience over mere specifications. Described as a ‘rolling lab’, the RN24 is an experimental playground for Hyundai’s engineers, allowing them to test and refine performance-focused EV technologies for future production cars.

With this approach, Hyundai hopes to tap into the unrealized potential of electric rally cars. If you are in doubt, regardless, the RN24 isn’t slated for production.
