Audi is enhancing its A3 offering with the introduction of the earlier announced new plug-in hybrid models, the 40 TFSI e and 45 TFSI e. These models boast more power and double the battery capacity over their predecessors. A3 enthusiasts can also look forward to the 40 TFSI e in the rugged Allstreet trim, designed to match the crossover trend.
The updated PHEV lineup, arriving after Audi’s spring 2024 refresh of its diesel and gasoline A3 models, features significant upgrades in range and power. The 40 TFSI e and 45 TFSI e adopt Audi’s new 1.5 TFSI evo2 turbocharged engine, replacing the previous 1.4 TFSI.
Re-engineered evo2 engine
To recap, the 40 TFSI e maintains a system output of 204 horsepower, while the 45 TFSI e boosts from 245 horsepower to 272 horsepower. This performance leap stems from the re-engineering of the evo2 engine, which includes variable turbine geometry, an optimized combustion process, and increased compression ratios.
Audi has also doubled the battery capacity, enabling an electric-only WLTP range of nearly 140 kilometers. With its enhanced electric drivetrain and energy management, the A3 PHEVs deliver a blend of efficiency and performance that seems well-suited to answer the renewed interest in plug-in hybrids.
A3 Allstreet: the versatile crossover
The newly announced A3 Allstreet 40 TFSI e stands out with its off-road-inspired design, raised suspension, and distinctive body cladding. Like the other A3 models, it combines a 1.5 TFSI engine with an 85 kW electric motor, producing a total system output of 204 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. The Allstreet reaches a top speed of 225 km/hour and can travel up to 140 km in pure electric mode.
A robust 25.7 kWh high-voltage battery ensures a competitive electric range, while advanced drive management optimizes the interplay between the combustion engine and the electric motor. Through intuitive controls, the driver can prioritize electric driving, making it suitable for emissions-free urban commutes and efficient long-distance travel.
Fast charging
Another handy feature for long-distance travelers is that the A3 PHEVs support DC fast charging at up to 50 kW, replenishing the battery from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes.
Alternatively, AC charging at 11 kW allows a full charge in just 2.5 hours. The energy flows and battery status are visualized on the MMI display, while paddle shifters enable control over regenerative braking. The battery can also preheat the car. The A3 Allstreet 40 TFSI e starts at €47,550, and orders open in mid-November.
